2016 SAICE Western Cape Bridge Building Competition

Once again HHO Africa was honoured to assist with sponsoring the annual SAICE Western Cape Bridge Building competition. Andrew Rowan from the Cape Town Office Structures Department was asked to be a judge for the day, and to help the MC with the breaking of the bridges at the close of the competition.

Teams of budding ‘wannabe’ engineers were given the day to come up with their designs, which would be judged on aesthetics and structural principles. The bridges were then weighed and load tested to destruction. A combination score (aesthetics, weight, load carrying capacity) then determined which team was the winner, earning them the opportunity to compete in the National completion later this year. Teams ranging from junior schools up to tertiary colleges participated, with Brackenfell High School emerging the worthy winner. Congrats to all who competed, and we look forward to seeing some of those bright young minds entering the industry in the not too distant future!
