Bridges are an integral part of a transportation network. While bridges play a strategic role in providing access to transport, we also recognise the fact that they serve as an important tool in connecting and bringing communities together.
At HHO, we have won many prestigious awards over the years, and we have experience in the planning, design, structural analysis, project management construction, inspection, maintenance and rehabilitation of a wide variety of new and existing bridge structures. The scale of projects ranges from the provision of simple culverts to major viaducts.
Our impressive portfolio includes many new bridges and we have extensive experience in the modification, strengthening and rehabilitation of existing bridges. We can provide a comprehensive service for our clients in the multi-faceted world of bridge engineering.
Notable projects include the multi-awardwinning Koeberg Interchange, as well as the Gautrain Viaducts in Pretoria. The Ugie Langeni viaduct in the Eastern Cape is also a landmark structure that has earned us much praise.
HHO designed and supervised 2 new flyover viaducts totalling 1,3km in length. Works included widening of the existing M5 viaduct. Deck types included simply supported and continuous box girders, as well as precast post-tensioned ‘T’ and ‘U’ beams.
HHO designed and implemented this 245m long viaduct crossing an indigenous forest with 600 year old trees. The viaduct comprises seven 35m spans and fifty-six 94 ton pre-stressed beams, launched up a 11% gradient. The piers were positioned to avoid environmental impacts, the tallest pier being 45m high.
HHO was involved in the preliminary design of two portions of the project and the detailed design of the Pretoria – Hatfield portion, which is 8km long, but includes a total length of 1.5km of structure, made up of 3 viaducts (longest 389m), 3 fly-overs and 12 bridge structures. Five PRASA stations were also upgraded.
